Image of the Day: Operation Linebacker II

by Abigail Pfeiffer on December 18, 2012

Today’s image of the day is from the National Museum of the US Air Force. On December 18, 1972 President Nixon announced the beginning of Operation Linebacker II, otherwise known as the Christmas bombings. This was an 11 day, around the clock bombing of strategic targets in North Vietnam, in an attempt to bring North Vietnam back to the bargaining table after earlier negotiations failed in October 1972. To read more about strategic bombing during the Vietnam War, you can read my essay by clicking here.

The caption for this image reads: “1st Lt. William Wilson, an F-111A weapon system officer in the 429th Tactical Fighter Squadron, ejected over North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit during a Linebacker II mission. After evading for five days, Wilson was captured. Wilson and the pilot, Capt. Robert Sponeybarger, were both released at the war’s end. (U.S. Air Force photo).”
